Academic rewards and honorary tasks:

A 500 000 SEK award from "Hildur Nordins Minnesfond" in 2002. This is the original statement from the trust: "You have been nominated and selected as a result of your important contributions to Swedish and international mycology. These contributions show your outstanding ability to identify and resolve problems of great importance both to science and to society. The selection was also based on your unusual talent to combine many research fields, e.g. taxonomy, ecology, physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology, your pedagogic gifts, technical solutions and your explicit aim to promote biodiversity and rural economy by exploring special forest products".

Royal support for my research (Stipendium från Stiftelsen Konung Carl XVI Gustafs 50-årsfond) in June 2000.

Lecturer at the university annual promotion festivity in 1999 (Högtidsföreläsare vid SLU:s doktorspromotion).

The Linnaeus prize (Kungliga Vetenskapssocieteten - Uppsala) 1994 for my PhD-thesis.

Academic employments:

2003-
Visiting professor at the Botany Section, Museum of Evolution, Uppsala University, financed by "Hildur Nordins Minnesfond för vetenskaplig forskning". I perform research, supervise PhD- and MSc-students and coordinate the reference group planning for a national mushroom centre.

1996-2003
My position as a scientist at Department of Forest Mycology and Pathology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, has been financed by The Swedish Council for Forestry and Agricultural Research since 1996. In addition to research, I teach 10% and I have supervised four MSc - students and now actively supervise PhD-students Ignacio Rangel and Christina Wed&eacut;n for whom I am main supervisor. I also work five hours per week as a consultant and member of the board of the biotechnology company Cantharellus AB (registrerad "bisyssla").

1994-1995
Assistant professor at Oregon State University financed by The Swedish Council for Forestry and Agricultural Research. I was also invited as a guest scientist financed by the Crop & Food Research, Invermay Agricultural Centre, Mosgiel, New Zealand September-October 1995.

1990-1994
The Ph.D.-student position at Department of Physiological botany, Uppsala University, was financed by The Swedish Council for Forestry and Agricultural Research. I was a member of the Department committee and the committee for gender equality.

The Biology Education Centre, Uppsala University, employed me as an assistant at the undergraduate courses in cell biology and botany and as a combined teacher and assistant in courses in mycology and plant physiology, 20% of full time during the whole Ph.D. period.

1986
For six weeks I was employed as an assistant to professors Ernberg and Klein at the Karolinska Institute, Department of Tumor Biology. The aim was to study the epidemiology of Epstein-Barr Virus related diseases using ELISA and Western Blotting.

Publications

In total, I have been cited 134 times in international journals (ISI). At present, I have 31 articles published in refereed journals, 2 accepted articles, 18 conference abstracts and 1 accepted patent. My personal impact factor is 4.5 (mycological journals which contain research on macromycetes have an impact of 1.5 or less). My intention is always to put my students (Christina Wedén, Mattias Dahlman, Niclas Bergius, Ignacio Rangel-Castro, Nicklas Samils, Hanna Johannesson) as first authors, though my supervisorship includes planning, finance and corresponding authorship.

Public information
I have been an excursion leader and lecturer in mycology, entomology and botany for different public societies (Biologilärarna i Uppsala, Biologiska ämnesrådet, Botaniska Föreningen i Lund, Botaniska sektionen i Uppsala, Friluftsfrämjandet, Fältbiologerna, Föreningen skogsträdsförädling, Göteborgs svampklubb, Linköpings svampklubb, Linnés vänner, Måltidsakademien, Naturskyddsföreningen, North American Truffling Society, Perkin-Elmer, Restauranghögskolan i Grythyttan , RIFO (Riksdagsmän och Forskning), Skansen, Svampkonsulenterna, Svenska svampodlarföreningen, Sveriges mykologiska förening, Sällskapet för Bio-Patologi, Trädgårdsmässan i Linköping, Upplands entomologiska förening, Uppsala svampklubb, Venture Cup, Vetenskapsfestivalen i Lund etc ).

In April 1997 I was a judge at the Swedish Science and Engineering Fair at Riksmuseum, arranged by Förbundet Unga Forskare.

In 1997 I was asked to join the new board of Svampfrämjandet, a national committee aiming at public information on mushroom knowledge covering nutrition, medicin, systematics, physiology, ecology, cultivation, cooking and picking.

My field data from excursions have been filed in the Swedish Mycological Society's data base aiming at inventoring the macromycetes of Sweden. My contribution is approximately 1600 observations in the province of Uppland, i.e. 17% of the total number of records.

I have created web pages covering mushroom links as a service to the Swedish public:

Contacts with mass media

Newspapers and magazines:
More than 40 Swedish news papers have published articles about my chanterelle research. To my knowledge, reports were also published in e.g. l'Adige, Bedre Gardsbruk, Blick durch die Wirtschaft, Botanicus-brief, The Daily Telegraph, El Pais, Focus, Future, GEO, Gotlands tidningar, Hufvudstadsbladet, Illustrerad vetenskap, Ilta-Sanomat, the Independent, Land, Liberation, Livsmedelsteknik, Naturwissenschaftliche Rundschau, New Scientist, The Oregonian, Plant Talk, Die Presse, San Francisco Chronicle, Teknik och vetenskap, Telegraaf, The Times, The Washington Post, Viola Trädgårdsvärlden, Vår föda etc.

I have also published an illustrated newspaper article about French truffles (Upsala Nya Tidning, Jan 23, 1997) and desert truffles (Upsala Nya Tidning, 1998).

Together with my student Niclas Bergius, I had a lot of contacts with Swedish mass media in August 1998 when we had discovered large amounts of Tricholoma matsutake (Goliatmusseron) in Sweden. After presenting our results that Swedish T. nauseosum and Japanese T. matsutake are conspecific (University of Tokyo), Japanese press published the results in October 1999. One illustrated article was published in Asahi News, the world's second biggest news paper.

Radio:
I have participated in radio programs by BBC and NPR (National Public Radio in USA), 50 million listeners each, to describe mycorrhiza and the cultivation of chanterelles. Also I have given interviews to several Nordic radio programs such as Vetenskapens värld, Vetenskapsradion, Radio Kristianstad, Radio Uppland, Ålandsradion etc (1994, 1997, 1998, 1999).

TV:
Swedish News (channels 1,2 and 4) made interviews about chanterelle and truffle research. I also participated in live TV-programs 1994, 1997, 1998 (TV4 Morning news and Naturens eko).

Further information can be given by the Information office at the university.
